Mood Board

 [To Enlarge] Left-Click the Image
Mood Board.
This Mood Board shows the kind of influences that can be related to the genre, representation and age bracket of our Music Video.  Moreover, several types of mediums are shown, for instance, Twitter and FaceBook, as well as MySpace (where we found our chosen band).  Other photographs are of signed bands like Coldplay, the All-American Rejects and The Killers. Although this Mood Board was created using Picasa 3, I managed to give it a more realistic touch by placing the images on a cork board surface.
Side Note:  These images were not arranged in any specific order (HATE seems to have come above FaceBook - this was not done purposely).

Johnny Cash 'Hurt' Music Video Analysis (Nine Inch Nails cover)

The song ‘Hurt’ was written, performed and released in 1994 by Nine Inch Nails (NIN) - Trent Reznor.  It managed to re-catch the attention of the public when Rick Rubin (producer) persuaded Johnny Cash to cover this song.  Cash described this song as being ‘the best anti-drug song I ever heard’.

I discovered through web research that Johnny Cash was a heavy drinker, as well as being addicted to drugs like amphetamines and barbiturates.  After reviewing the lyrics, I noticed that it refers a lot to pain and self-harm.  Cash was also a very devoted and troubled Christian; linking to the line ‘I wear this crown of thorns, upon my liar’s chair’, this could make reference to the story of Jesus and the Station’s of the Cross where he had to wear a crown of thorns on his way to his crucifixion.
As previously mentioned, I believe this Music Video backs up my idea of Cash referring to his past.  The cover of ‘Hurt’ by Johnny Cash begins with a highly saturated short, medium long shot film clip of Johnny Cash and his guitar playing in a setting that resembles a home (perhaps his home), whilst singing ‘I hurt myself today’. This is then followed by a medium close-up of his upper body; this enables the viewer to identify Cash’s actions and emotions; through his facial expressions.  Moreover, as he sings the line ‘the old familiar sting’; several film clips of his past life are shown in succession afterwards that may refer to his younger years.  These include his home in Dyess, Arkansas, the American flag blowing in the wind, his ‘closed to the public’ ‘House of Cash’ Museum.  Before going back to the initial setting in his home.  Moreover, Cash is wearing a black jacket, which could be associated with the darkness of the lyrics of the song.  Further on in the song, Johnny Cash sings the line ‘every one I know, goes away in the end’, this line could refer the (recent at the time) death of his wife, June Carter.  A medium long shot of a framed picture of his wife is shown sequentially.  Furthermore, a couple of seconds later, he sings ‘And you can have it all, my Empire of Dirt’, whilst at the same time, showing a short medium long shot clip of him on-stage at one of his concerts, jump-cutting to short long shot and close-up clips of a room full of his achievements.  Including one close-up of a vinyl record in a broken-glassed frame that appears to be sitting on the floor; this could represent Cash’s dying career in the Music Industry.

This Music Video has been separated into two parts, after one of these films clips include a high-angled shot of Johnny Cash starring at the viewer, saying these words: ’will you stay the hell away from me, you hear?’, this could have been an indication of a turning point in his life, when he began drinking and taking drugs. Another signifier could have been the medium high-angled close-up of Cash being put being bars by an policeman. The next few scenes compile many more short film clips of him in his younger years.  I have decided to skip the sequential clips as it is part of the chorus, therefore the same lyrics are used, and so these scenes might have a direct reference to the scenes from the last time he sung the chorus.

In the end of the Music Video, there are many more short film-clips associated with Cash’s devotion and troubling Christian ways, as mentioned in my second paragraph.  These clips include a close-up of a struggling Jesus walking with the Cross, a white Cross on an Archway; all edited together with a repetition of nails getting hit by a hammer in between.  And finally, as the pace of the song steadily increases towards the end, we see the train from the beginning speed up.  This line could also represent his life if he was ‘a million miles away’, if we were to say that the train was travelling that far.

I believe that the public knew that his career and life was coming to an end.  This song could have been the epitaph (short text honouring a deceased person) of Johnny Cash’s life.  In this video, I felt like he was regretful for certain actions he had committed; as he states ‘if I could start again’, demonstrating that he would have done things differently.  Sadly, Johnny Cash died at the age of 71, four months after this Music Video was released.

Goodwin (Music Video Analyser) and his SIX rules.

FIRST rule --> A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
e.g. in Billy Idol's - 'White Wedding' Music Video, where Billy Idol is singing about a wedding, whilst at the same time attending one. To view the video, watch below:

SECOND rule --> A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
e.g. in Green Day's - 'American Idiot', where the music pace and tone can easily be related to what the band is doing (Side Note: The music is more likely to correlate with the visuals if it is a Spectacle Genre Music Video),
this video by Green Day demonstrates this very clearly:

THIRD rule --> There may be a reference to point of views (or looking - therefore, meaning that the director purposefully made the Music Video watchable).
e.g. in The Ting Ting's - 'Shut Up and Let Me Go' Music Video, where we are expected to look between the characters fingers and thumbs. See for yourself:

FOURTH rule --> Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
e.g. in Ellie Goulding's - 'Starry Eyed' Music Video, evidently, because of the title and lyrics of the song, viewing Goulding's eyes would have been necessary. Feel free to see for yourself by playing the video below:

FIFTH rule --> Voyeurism (showing skin) often plays a major part, especially in relation to females,
e.g. in Shakira's - 'She Wolf' Music Video. In one of the scenes, Shakira appears to be near-naked (in the Cage Scene), to see for yourself, play the video below:

SIXTH rule --> Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.
e.g. in Gwen Stefani's - 'What are you waiting for?' Music Video, where she is referring to an 'Alice in Wonderland' theme.  Feel free to play the video below:

Thursday 16th September 2010 - Session 4

Aim of session
  • Find out about the music analyse, Goodwin and his six rules.
  • Post information onto blog.

Achievements

  •  We posted onto the blog Goodwin’s six rules with six different music videos giving an example of each rule visually.

- The Fray was formed by schoolmates in 2002
- The band consists of Isaac Slade, Joe King, Ben Wysocki and Dave Welsh
- Furthermore, they have been also been labeled as an Alternative Rock band (as well as Pop Rock and Piano Rock)
- I believe their target audience also ranges from around 11-25 years old.
- They were inspired by several bands like Counting Cows, Better Than Ezra, Radiohead and U2.
- The band achieved mainstream success with the release of their debut album, How to Save a Life in 2005, which was certified double platinum by the RIAA and platinum in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.
- Furthermore, The Fray achieved national success with their first single, "Over My Head (Cable Car)", which became a top ten hit in the United States.
- Their success did not end there: the release of their second single, "How to Save a Life", brought the band worldwide fame. (The song charted in the top three of the Billboard Hot 100 and was a top 5 single in Countries such as Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom).

- In 2000, their single ‘Yellow’ found them success and fame around the world. This was followed by another success; their debut album, ‘Parachutes’ was nominated for the Mercury Prize.

Chosen Unsigned Artist/Band and Song & Info. (from Pitch Presentation)

We have decided to promote Get Set Radio, choosing their song 'Jump' as a soundtrack for our own Music Video.
Get Set Radio is a band that was formed in the Feburary of 2008.

It originally consisted of 4 band members (Will, Steve, Ruby and Jonas) but has recently become a 3-man band, as Jonas (the drummer) has decided to move back to his homeland, in Sweden. Will, Steve and Ruby are now looking for a new dummer to fill his place.
Furthermore, they have been categorised as an Alternative Rock band, therefore we will be researching and analysing the Music and Music Videos produced by Sucessful Signed Alternative/Soft Rock Bands like The Killers, The Fray, Coldplay and another (to be decided).

The song used is entitled 'Jump' and the lyrics illustrate - (to be confirmed)
The genre of Music Video that we believe would best suit this song is either Narrative or Spectacle, as we think we should try and demonstrate what this man is going through in visual form (through a Narrative of the events that are being described in the song).  The Spectacle element will mainly be implemented in the editing process of the Band/Song promotion.

Representations:
Gender: The Music Video will represent the dominance of the girl over the boy in the relationship.
Class: The male will be of working class, whereas the female is higher-class (reason why she may be more dominant in the relationship).
Race: Both characters (male and female) are Caucasian White.

Location(s) and Mise-en-Scene:
Location(s): The Music Video filming will take place in the streets of Guildford, in a Household and various Alley Ways.
Mise-en-Scene:

Costumes
We have decided to represent our characters as a working class male and a middle class female. We have done this as it helps the audience relate more to the characters and the music as well as presenting both characters with different family backgrounds, demostrating one of the big differences between the two people and why they break up at the beginning of the music video/song.
Male Character: -White short-sleeved t-shirt
                         -Jeans
                         -Watch
                         -Muddy white trainers

Female Character: -Green Cashmere Top
                             -Black 'work' trousers
                             -Make-up
                             -Black shoes
Props
Here is a list of the props that we will be using within our music video:
            - Heart 'amber' necklace pendant
            - 'Karma' Poster
List of Actors:
Spectacle: We might try to contact the Band and include them in our Music Video.
